AM: Can you share a bit about your early life and what inspired you to pursue rugby?
Antoine Zeghdar: I began playing rugby in Monaco at the age of 13. As soon as I stepped onto the pitch, I really liked the team spirit and the values the sport promotes. I enjoy being challenged, which motivated me to continue in rugby. I progressed through various levels and ultimately made it to the French team for the Olympics in Sevens.

AM: Are there any challenges you faced early in your career that shaped you as a player?
Antoine
Zeghdar: One significant challenge was in 2020 when the French team did
not qualify for the Olympics in Tokyo. We lost in the final match for
the last qualifying spot in Monaco, which was particularly tough as my
family and friends were there to witness it. It was a disappointing
moment for me, but it also became a motivation for me to strive for a
gold medal in Paris.
AM: Please take us through your Paris 2024 journey up until the winning moment. How did it all feel?
Antoine
Zeghdar: Not participating in the Tokyo Olympics made competing in my
home country for Paris particularly special. When we arrived, there were
around 80,000 cheering fans in the stadium. Rugby Sevens matches are
short, just 14 minutes long, and the atmosphere was intense. When we
finished the final and realized we were Olympic champions, I immediately
looked for my family in the crowd. When they reached the field, I
hugged them tightly, grateful for all the sacrifices we had made
together. The emotions from all those years of hard work culminated in
that moment of victory.

AM: Can you walk us through a typical training regimen for you? How do you balance strength and agility training?
Antoine
Zeghdar: Rugby Sevens requires a focus on speed and agility rather than
contact, which distinguishes it from Rugby Fifteens. We train for
speed, pace, acceleration, and agility through various drills. We also
incorporate many gym sessions, aiming to find a balance between strength
training and maintaining our agility to be the best players on the
field.
AM: Nutrition plays a crucial role in sports. What does your diet look like on game days versus training days?
Antoine
Zeghdar: Nutrition is vital for performance, and while we're not
strictly monitored, I personally pay close attention to my diet. I’ve
learned what foods work best for me and the appropriate portion sizes. I
take care to ensure I have the energy needed on the field, focusing on
proper nutrition to perform at my best.

AM: How do you mentally prepare before a big match?
Antoine
Zeghdar: My biggest game ever was during the Olympics. I started the
tournament confident in my preparation and reminded myself that I didn’t
arrive there by chance. Before the game, I focused on giving 100%
effort; if I did my best, I would have no regrets. There is always
pressure in such scenarios, especially playing for my country, but once
the whistle blew, I concentrated on enjoying the game and remaining
present.
AM: Rugby can be demanding. How do you maintain a balance between your professional commitments and personal life?
Antoine
Zeghdar: Balancing my professional and personal life is challenging but
part of being a professional rugby player. I make sacrifices, such as
missing outings with friends or family dinners, opting for healthier
meals. Sometimes, it’s difficult to skip social events because of early
training, but I remind myself why I make these sacrifices—to experience
incredible events like the Olympics and travel to exciting places for
competitions. The love for competition fuels my commitment, and I’m
grateful for the journey.

AM: How do you use your influence as a professional athlete to inspire others?
Antoine
Zeghdar: After the Olympics and throughout my career, I recognize the
influence I can have, particularly on young people. I encourage them to
play rugby and develop themselves. Above all, I believe in being 100%
yourself; some will like you, and some won’t, but the most important
thing is to live authentically and seek happiness. If I can inspire
others to pursue their best selves, I think that would contribute to a
better world.
AM: What are some hobbies or activities you enjoy outside of rugby?
Antoine
Zeghdar: I have various hobbies and enjoy being curious, especially
about new experiences. I love traveling, which aligns well with my job
in Rugby Sevens since we compete globally. Whenever I have holidays, I
explore different cultures. I also have a passion for music; I was a
drummer in a band when I was younger, and I miss that experience. I also
enjoy reading and have recently started meditating. Spending time with
family and friends is also very important to me.

Antoine Zeghdar: I don't have a specific favorite brand, but I'm increasingly interested in fashion. I attended the recent women's fashion week and hope to go to the men's edition next. Fashion fascinates me, especially the styles that are fun and reflective of haute couture.
Rugby players are often seen as rugged, which is important during a game since it is a contact sport; being physical is essential. However, I believe it's equally important to be kind and approachable outside of the pitch. Many players carry a gentle demeanor outside of rugby, which can be surprising compared to their on-field persona.

AM: If you could give one piece of advice to young athletes looking to make it in rugby, what would it be?
Antoine
Zeghdar: My advice to a young player would be to never give up if they
truly want to become a professional rugby player. There will be
sacrifices to make, but they will be worth it. Hard work always pays off
in the end, so just stay committed and keep pushing forward.
